In conjunction with the AAMC GREAT Group Professional Development Meeting, and sponsored in part by the Burroughs Wellcome Foundation, the NIH BEST Consortium will hold a workshop to share best practices and lessons learned with the training community at large outside of the NIH BEST Consortium, as well as offer practical guidance on how to motivate, create, implement, evaluate, and demonstrate the value of career and professional development opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral scholars.

While the BEST Program consortium is sharing the results of its efforts so far, we hope the meeting will spur discussion and shared lessons learned elsewhere that can help others set up professional development programming at their institutions. Whether your budget at this point requires no- or low-cost implementation, or if you have larger resources to work with, these sessions will provide inspiration and tools to augment your programming for graduate students and postdocs to support their professional development for career success.

Panel and interactive breakout session formats will be used to address the following issues:

  • range of options and programs
  • best practices
  • defining associated costs (e.g. start-up/one-time, ongoing, etc.)
  • assessment/evaluation instruments
  • how to demonstrate value for leadership

Session topics will include, but are not limited to:

  • Workshops (single one-time event)
  • Courses (multi-event)
  • Internships or Experiential Learning
  • Program Staffing
  • Technology Resources
  • Data collection and use of data in affecting culture change

The range of example programs/programming discussed will include low and no cost solutions.

Stay on after this meeting for the AAMC GREAT Group Professional Development Meeting September 7-9, 2017 that immediately follows.
