Networking for chemical biologists

Thanks to the organizational capabilities of Michael Lynch, we had a very engaging audience today from the Chemistry-Biology Interface training grant group which is led by Professor Hening Lin. Made up of chemists, biologists, and chemical engineers, we all enjoyed hearing elevator pitches about everyone's research and motivation for why to get out of bed every morning to go to the lab.

We practiced networking (with some tips for those of us who are introverts) and decided we'd sit next to someone new at the next seminar to try out our introductions, listen well to their introduction to find a point of commonality, and make it easy for them to introduce us to others. So networking begins! We also learned interesting facts about each other: did you know there are wine-makers, pig-raisers, finance wanna-bes, potters and someone who has never broken a bone amongst us? Over pizza we discussed some career exploration strategies and learned from BESTies in the crowd (Emily Perregaux, Gael Nicolas, and Erin Nicklow) what they got out of the BEST program so far. It seems the flexibility and personalization really resonates.

"Planning the career-development workshop for the CBI with Susi was a great experience. The workshop really helped the trainees and participants start thinking about their career goals, as well as what they want their future to look like after they get a PhD. For me personally, being able to have a part in planning an event that helped connect my peers and colleagues to Susi and the BEST program was very rewarding.
